The Definition of Lifestyle and Its Importance to Our Well-Being

A lifestyle is the pattern of one’s attitudes, values, behaviours, and practices – the behavioural framework that orientates and shapes personal life choices and experiences. It has a fundamental role in the identification of one’s self and others as it provides meaning to daily living.

The concept of lifestyle has been defined by different models, and has mainly been the subject of studies in sociology and psychology. The main interpretations of lifestyle can be grouped into three categories: internal, external and temporal.

Internal models focus on the idea that the lifestyle is an expression of personal idiosyncrasies, that is to say, it is a form of individuality that distinguishes us from others. Theories that emphasise the external dimension view the lifestyle as a product of the relationship between an individual and society and the way in which they interact with the environment. This view also has its roots in the work of Milton Rokeach, Arnold Mitchell and Lynn R. Kahle [3,4].

External models tend to focus on the lifestyle as a reflection of the position in the social hierarchy that is the consequence of inherited structures and the historical model. This is a key point in the analysis of socioeconomic disparities, but it has been applied in many fields, including health.

A third interpretation of the lifestyle is that of a system of rules, beliefs, and goals that a person develops. These theories often include elements from both the internal and the external dimensions, but they place greater emphasis on an individual’s beliefs and inclinations.

Having a healthy lifestyle is essential to our well-being. It can prevent diseases, promote mental and physical fitness, and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
